web surfin

The nest is crawling with spiders this week! After using the hose in a super soaker fashion, there's enough water here to bring in the long board. While we get this mess mopped up, here's some news to use in the tubes.

Slide in to Dick's Sporting Goods in Pembroke Pines this weekend to hang ten with the Mogan Man. Capt. Blair Wiggins brings the DSG Mogan Tour and a bunch of his signature series rods for an in-store meet & greet. Get there early before the stock is wiped out! Buy a "Flats Blue" rod and get a FREE Mogan Man jersey, as modeled by one of our Mogan Maidens, Sharon, on the Facebook AF fan page. Capt. Blair will be in-store this Saturday, April 30th 11 am – 4 pm. Excellent!

Tune in for Friday's episode as the Mogan Man hooks up with Capt. Ryan Lambert from Cajun Fishing Adventures to chase down some "Bodacious Bulls" in Southern Louisiana. The pair will be using the gnarly new "Flats Blue" rods by Wright & McGill in both the spinning and bait casting models to pluck some big Louisiana redfish from the skinny waters of the bayou. Catch the new episodes every Friday @ 10:30 am on SunSports with replays Sunday @ 9:30 pm and Tuesday @ 6:30 am. Crank it up, dude!

Redfish are pouring in from all sides! The AF fan page on Facebook has been plastered with redfish lately. This week, another Mogan Maiden lands the title Mogan of the Week with a prize catch. Sheila shows us that a small boat can sneak up on a big fish in the shallow waters. She gloved that red like a Lightning goalie gloves a puck in the playoffs!

Ringing another one out,

29/04/2011 - Viaduct - Cary

Weight – 62lb 1oz
Catch – 10 Bream, 4 Carp, 1 Tench
Weather – Cool start, blustery and mostly sunny
Match – Pole Only Open – 17th (out of 53) – 1st in section

58 booked in to make the most of the extra day’s holiday due to the Royal Wedding, however the 5 no shows obviously thought watching TV was better than fishing.

To be honest I wasn’t that enthusiastic about fishing today, simply because Viaduct is a venue that I rarely fish, mainly to due to the hours drive and I haven’t really got to grips with the place. Everyone has gone meat crazy at the moment, including Viaduct and I felt obliged to bring a couple of tins, although I was hoping to catch on pellet and paste.

Most wanted to avoid Cary, because it was only won with 40lb yesterday, so not many feeding fish. I also wanted to avoid drawing the diagonal bank, due to the forecast NE wind which would cut across these pegs. So peg 101 was on the wrong lake and the wrong bank as far as I was concerned. Also a few enquiries about its potential were met with screwed up face, suggesting a tough day was on the cards.

My section ran from 98-109, which included Alan Oram next to me on 100 and Tony Rixon on 105, Having Alan next to me was going to a real challenge and is 1 of those anglers I would prefer not to be drawn next to, because he always seems to get those carp with a simple, yet very effective approach. Matt Tomes obviously sensed blood and thought a £1 side bet would be a good idea.

With the likelihood that the wind was going to increase in strength later in the day, decided that 13m would be my main swim. This would also allow me to fish further out later in the match should the fish back off. 5m would be my other line in case some of those big carp moved in, but to be honest I wasn’t expecting much from here and the margins was a non-starter with Nigel Bartlett on the other side of me.

Rigs were a dura 6 4x14 (shotted shirt button style) with a 16 B960 to .17 and a 0.5g float with a 18 B911 to .14, in case I needed a lighter rig. Both were hair rigged. I also had a paste rig, but only had 1 bite on it at 5m.

On the all in a cup of mostly 6mm, with a few 4s, meat & corn went in at 13m, plus a handful of 8mm & meat at 5m. Started on the dura 6 rig, with an 8mm pellet. 10mins later I had a 9lb carp. That was a really useful start. The next 45mins I was getting loads of dips on the float as the silvers tried to whittle the pellet down, but no carp. A switch to the 0.5g rig and 6mm pellet saw a run of bream up to 3½lb, feeding a pouch of 6mm every 5mins.

By the ½ way point I was up 20-25lb all on pellet and I was thinking who needs meat! Alan had 2 carp and with the size of fish in Cary wasn’t far behind. Unfortunately, I was beginning to struggle for bites, which also coincided with the strengthening wind. I did set up a 0.75g rig, but only had 1 skimmer on that.

Since my 5m line was a waste of time I really needed my long line to work. Throughout I had been firing a few 8mm at 16m for later and in the final 2 hours concentrated on the dura 6 rig, but with the increased wind, fished a 10mm piece of meat, to mainly use it as anchor. I kept the 6mm going in at 13m, but was actually fishing at 14-15m when the wind allowed, dropping back to 13m when the wind was particularly strong.

Alan was catching me up and with 30mins left now had 6 carp to my 4 (which included 2 doubles). Although I had a good net of skimmers, I felt I was now behind and thinking he’s (Alan) done it again. Fortunately I had another skimmer and a tench to beat Alan by 3-10 and to win the section. Tony weighed 43-4 to finish 3rd in section with everyone else not weighing, including Matt Tomes who chucked back 3lb. It was a pleasure to take your pound –lol.

Cary was a tough nut to crack today, due to the time of year. 105lb won our lake from 85, whilst my weight was 4th. Campbell however was the place to be with 6 ton weights.

So I won my section which I was really pleased about and I nearly picked up in silvers. My 21-1 was 5th on the day, only 13oz away from 3rd.

1st 147-14 – Matt Parsons P132
2nd 137-9 – S Kiefer P113
3rd 133-10 – Nicky Collier P94
4th 124-6 – Mike Nicholls P111
5th 123-4 – Andy Power P116
6th 114-13 – Will Bohne P121

Silvers
1st 25-1 – Phil Harding P71
2nd 23-7 – Alan Healey P121
3rd 21-14 – Matt Parsons P132

Persistence

So today I was part of a huge 5 boat group trip. Marshal and Michael fished in my boat. We decided to go dig our heels into the higher, more off color water and fish for some pigs. The sun was bright and the sky was blue. We ended up turning more than a handful of really nice browns. Weeven had some awesome takes, but we just couldn't seem to get one to the boat. In fact, we had two fish eat that were well over 23 or 24 inches! On one of the last runs of the day, Marshal did land this fat and sassy rainbow! All in all the action was good today and it was another awesome morning on the Little Red River.

How to Get Rid of Duckweed and Watermeal

This is definitely the most boring blog post I have written to date! Yep, I think I am going to write all about watermeal and duckweed. I just hope I can keep my eyes open as I type.....Anyhow, many of you will hopefully find this information very helpful, easy to read and understand. Here we go:

To get started try to grasp this concept, it is key to learning about everything in your body of water. An organism can survive pretty much anywhere, but with IDEAL HABITAT, that organism will thrive! Basically anything alive will only thrive if it has its preferred habitat. If you want fish to thrive, give em their preferred habitat. If you want crayfish- habitat, if you want waterfowl- habitat. Basically here is a saying you need to remember "If you build it, they will come"

So as goes the habitat, so goes the organism. This is a pretty basic and very understandable and accepted statement for deer, pheasants, rabbits, and many other desirable animals. For some reason though, it is a concept that many folks just simply cannot grasp when it comes to undesirable or invasive specimens. So I have written three full paragraphs now just setting the stage for the topic at hand.

How to get rid of duckweed and watermeal? Well, the first step is to properly identify what exactly you have. The very most costly mistake folks make is to not properly ID the green stuff growing on top of their pond. Next step is to understand the preferred habitat of your species. Spend a few minutes on Google researching. Third step is to do something to change or alter the current conditions. If you dont change the conditions, the green will just come right back. Then the last step is to completely kill it out.

Watermeal is teeny tiny green dots smaller than grain of sand. They float on the surface and are blown across the pond with the wind. They are very very romantic creatures and basically just spend their entire lives making babies. Here are some pics of watermeal:

Duckweed is also small and green, but waay bigger than watermeal. Duckweed usually have 3 little tiny leaves connected together kind of like a floating 3 leaf clover with little tiny hairlike roots attached to the bottom of the leaves. They also float on top of the pond and blow back and forth with the wind. Here are some pics of duckweed:

So anyhow its getting late and I didnt get nearly as far into actual information as I hoped, but hopefully you learned something about duckweed and watermeal so far. If I get a chance in the near future to pick this topic up again I will get into habitat alterations, treatment options, and application timing and rates. In the mean time if you have any questions about your specific situation, just shoot me an email to nate@hbpondmanagement.com

Extreme Carp Fishing Video

So I stumbled across this video from a fishing blog called lunkerhunt. I figured some would enjoy and probably you more conservative, mature, safe, boring, sane, older people probably not so much, but regardless it was a pretty funny video filmed just down the road:

MADE MY DAY!

Good news bad news.
There is a huge amount of squid in the area right now. For the game fish this is very good news. They are all very lethargic because they have gorged themselves until they can't eat any more. The news is mixed for anglers. Good, the area is teaming with life. Bad, the sea life just ain't hungry right now.

Day before yesterday yellowfin showed and have been seen feeding with schools of porpoise. But it is the same deal as the rest of the game. Just flippin us the fin.

This morning brought another incredible East Cape sunrise

Here was a huge surprise. Still on anchor we were able to make some outstanding bait. These are the first greenbacks I have seen this year.

We pitched the mackerel at tailer after tailer

After tailer

and saw a lot of this

Not a lot of this

Good friend and local Buena Vista resident Andrew Hughes fished with us today

Woops! Looks like the wahoo are still in the neighborhood

Here was the most fun part of my day. Jen Wren deck hand, Diego, show up this morning with his 8 year old son Ervis. It brought back memories of when my dad started taking me fishing at 8 years old.

I think the kid had a good day. It sure made mine.

Pint

Had a few tonight, Aloe Blacc in Oran More, good night. Fish can wait for a while...

Steve's Post Storm Rainbow!

So the storms have passed and the sun was out today. I guided Steve and Jay on a morning adventure and man was it nice to be on the river. We found a patch of good clean water on river and fished it hard. We had to work hard for our fish, but man was it worth it. Steve landed this nice rainbow towards the end of the morning and it made the day! It's looking like we are gunna get another squirt of water this afternoon and should have blue skies and cleaner water for the weekend!

Evergreen Lake Fish Structures

The high school bass fishing sectional was at Lake Evergreen last week and Mike Steffa the head honcho at Comlara Park put all the high school kids to work this year! Instead of just standing around waiting all day long, the kids assembled 36 porcupine fish attractors to enhance the habitat in the lake for the fish!

Herman Brothers Lake and Land Management in Peoria, Illinois provided the porcupine spheres to the park for a discount and would love the opportunity to provide materials for similar habitat projects in the future at discounted rates. The 1/2 inch pvc pipe was purchased by the park from a local hardware store. If your just an average guy though looking to purchase these attractors odds are you dont stand much of a chance to purchase them at a discount, you can however purchase them 24 hours per day online at full retail value simply by visiting products.hbpondmanagement.com.

Assembly of these units is pretty much rocket science, but high schoolers these days pick up on technology faster than I can vanish a fistful of fudge rounds. Getting the right amount of glue onto the pipe is crucial...... Anyhow here are some picks of the assembly process and a pic of the finished batch of fish attractors:

Also of note is that if you contact Comlara Park they will provide you with very detailed maps of Evergreen Lake and also GPS coordinates to the fish attractors. They have a full service bait shop and boat rental and one of the finest campgrounds in Illinois! A half day fishing trip with a local guide and you will be set on how to catch some serious fish on the lake for an enjoyable camping/fishing weekend!

Little Corkers!

Two of nine Corkwing caught tonight. The female would shake the Scottish record of 6oz without a doubt, where are the little digi scales when you need them!

my first trip to the driftless area

This is only my second year chasing inland trout in Wisconsin and I have to admit that I’ve become completely engrossed in this new fishing world. The satisfaction of the perfect drift, subtle takes, and self tied flies has become the pinnacle of fishing to me, so far... Last year I focused my trout efforts almost exclusively in Dane County which really was just enough to wet my whistle. I fished mostly in the heart of the summer and fought off heat exhaustion, overgrown weeds, and ticks with a thirst for blood. Even though I was a rookie with a few challenges to overcome, I still was able to put together a few meaningful trips last summer. I had a couple really good days where I caught lots of fish and some days I was lucky just to catch a few. Even worse, there were those humbling days where all I got was the skunk and a two plus hour ride home to reflect on my shortcomings.

It became apparent that the landscape and the stream quality only improved the further west I traveled. If it was a gamble to catch a trout within two hours of the house then why not expand the search for good trout water to four hours from the house? That put some of the state’s more famous trout streams in striking distance. Steelhead season has just recently ended but I made the switch to inland trout almost three weeks after Damien. He was sick of fighting the crowds on the local tribs long before me and has gotten a great deal of recon accomplished in just a few short weeks. It was great to go with him on my first trip west this season and he just seemed to point the car in the right direction. This was my first trip into the true “driftless” area and my best day ever catching over 30 trout. Check it out…

25/04/11 - K&A Canal - Foxhangers

Weight - 2lb 3oz
Catch - 4 Skimmers, 2 Roach, 1 Perch
Weather - Bright & sunny

As we all know Mr Rixon likes a good wind up and having read his blog from Todber yesterday he was at it again at my expense. However I have had the last laugh. Having collected his winnings for finishing 3rd, he proceeded to deposit his "empty" envelope into the back of my car. Image my delight when emptying the car I found the scrunched envelope complete with a tenner still inside - lol

Anyway back to today. Mark and I fancied an evening session after the tench and skimmers on the canal. Foxhangers is at the bottom of the Caen Hill locks and apparently there were loads of bream showing. Hippy and Craig also turned up so we were expecting a few fish.

I was a bit late arriving and the only place for my to set up was at the end of the pound. The 3 of them were fishing pellet and corn in anticipation of the bagging session, which never happened.

I caught my skimmers on the feeder & double dead maggot. I did briefly hook a carp on the pole, but it shot off and broke me. Hippy finished with about 4lb, Mark & Craig, both had less than 2lb, so not a very good session. No doubt the bream had other things on their minds.

Never mind, I've booked myself in as pools fodder for Viaducts pole only on Friday. Anything to get away from the hype of the royal wedding.

Turnberry Tomato

Decided to take Lynne to Turnberry on Monday, she asked if it was for a Spa and a nice lunch. As you can see she was disappointed and the nearest she got to the hotel and its facilities was around half a mile( in the background to her reading her book)

With a nice surf rolling in and fresh rag and mackerel for bait the targets were flounder with an the outside chance of a school Bass. In the end I would have been better taking a book as the fish were not in the mood to play, we did have a laugh though especially at the colour of my head which now resembles a tomato. Anyway, I will be back a few times later this year as it has some potential but I will be sure to take a hat!

A great morning session...

After the disappointment of last night, losing a decent sized fish I was determined to get out this morning to try to make up for my error of not checking my drag last night.

On checking the forecast last night it was giving a strong breeze from the North not ideal but I still set the alarm for 6am and was on the rocks by 6.40 chucking my feed shallow into filling gullies as the tide proceeded to push in.

As I arrived I noticed some sprats jumping out of the water and I could see terns working the water not 30 yards from the shore. Anticipation was building....

Almost immediately I had a follow from a nice fish, and after half an hour I had 2 3lbers and one just over 5lb landed with countless follows and one lost fish. The place was simply alive with bass, the days you dream about....

After a lull in activity I struck lucky again as I was reeling my feed shallow back in with the rod tip held upright I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a a big spikey dorsal fin and tail half out of the water homing straight in on my lure, with an almighty thump my feed shallow was seized by the fish no more than 6 foot in front of me the fish immediately turned on the water and I knew straight away that this was a nice fish. After an initial run of well over 20 yards the fish held up and did the usual viscous slashing on top of the water after an almighty tug of war where the fish really put my injection under serious pressure I managed to slide the bar of silver of just over 9lb onto the shore. Shaking uncontrollably after such an epic fight I popped out the hooks put the camera up onto a rock and set the self timer for a quick snap and back she went strongly......

All the fish were caught on the feed shallow sardine, a lethal lure over shallow ground.

Mornings like this don't come around to often, but it makes it all worth while when everything finally comes right.

Tight lines,

James.

24/04/2011 - Todber Manor - Park Lake

Weight –114lb 4oz
Catch – 48 Carp, 5 F1, 2 Bream, 1 Crucian, 1 Roach
Weather – Warm &sunny. Northerly breeze
Match – Match Fishing Scene website – 5th (out of 23). 2nd section

This match was scheduled to be solely a MFS match, however due to a shortage of numbers, Mark & I got a few “ringers” involved to bolster the numbers. So we had 24 booked in, but a no show meant 23 would be fishing. I don’t know why people think it’s acceptable to do this.

Mark didn’t know which peg to leave out, so in the end he let fate decide. The hot draws were 7 & 38. Fabio drew 38 for Mark and the peg left in the bag was 7 which was opposite! I found myself on peg 5, which I wasn’t too disappointed with and was definitely in the right area.

Talk leading up to the match was that meat was the bait, with some people feeding up to 10 tins! With up to nearly £2 per tin that’s an expensive day and neither Mark nor I felt it was necessary. Also I very rarely fish with meat, so decided to stick with paste and pellet, mixing 2kg of paste the night before.

Arriving at my peg there was already loads of fish slurping on the far bank, eating the spawn. Settled on 3 swims, the far side at 14.5m, 6m and down the RH margin. On the all in a handful of 4 & 6mm went down the margin and 6mm’s at 6m. Since there were fish in the far side, I went straight over with paste and the float had hardly settled before I was attached to a carp.

I started to feed 4mm with paste and started to get loads of liners and not able to properly hook a fish. And after 30mins I only had 2 fish in the net! Decided to cut out feeding the pellet and just use the paste, which helped, but fishing tighter to the far bank really made a difference and I started motoring for the next hour or so catching most put in, before the F1 started to put in a appearance. A switch to hair rigged 8mm pellet resulted in an F1, so switched back to paste.

After 3hrs I was up to 40 fish, however the 2nd half of the match proved to be really frustrating. From the beginning I had kept feeding the 6m line and the RH margin, hoping for the bigger carp. Unfortunately, I was getting loads of liners and the fish just weren’t getting their heads down. The next hour I only added 2 fish and I knew I was falling behind Mark opposite who was catching a load of fish down his margin. Also Ben to my left was catching, although looking down my section there didn’t seem to be anyone running away with it.

After that difficult hour I started catching again, but had to continually rotate my swims and I did manage a couple of better carp, but not enough.

On the all out I was left frustrated by the number liners. The lake hadn’t fished as well as previous weeks and the fish seemed to be more interested in spawning. In hindsight, was I right to stick with paste? Or should have targeted the F1? At the end of the day I was 37lb off 3rd, so I needed carp and I only needed 1 more carp to win the section. I think where I really missed out was that 1st 30mins when I should have fished tighter to the far bank sooner.

As for the problem with liners and the fish not getting their heads down. I felt I needed to feed a handful of pellet, just so that it reached the deck, because if I just trickled pellet in I doubt any of it would have reached the bottom.

Needless to say an enjoyable, if not frustrating day, with 102lb average per man.

1st 177- 7 Mark Poppleton - peg 38
2nd 164- 6 Tim Ford – peg 25
3rd 151-5 Tony Rixon – peg 29
4th 115-13 Ben Bench – peg 3
5th 114-4 Ken Rayner – peg 5
6th 112- 7 Mark Blake – peg 14

Swordfish & Marlin - Latest Update

APRIL 17th to 22nd, 2011

OVERALL CATCH SUCCESS RATE FOR ALL SPECIES COMBINED 87%

BILLFISH: We were very much encouraged to see a climb on marlin catches this week, in fact forty-seven percent of our charters caught striped marlin, this is right on schedule with what scientists told us months ago, that fishing would pick up as the La Niña current comes to an end in the latter part of April. Nevertheless before we even talk about marlin catches, we need to report something even more of a prized catch, the broadbill swordfish. What does a state governor do when he leaves office? Why, he goes fishing and this is exactly what now ex-governor  of Baja California Sur,Narciso Agundez did with his sons last week-end. He was aboard the locally famous “Fisherman” fishing an area between San Jose and the East Cape known as Vinoramas, his group didn’t have a particular plan so they started off close to shore and caught nine groupers up to about 15 lbs, they then hooked and fought a striped marlin to the boat, later in the day around 3.30 pm they spotted a swordfish on the surface, which appeared to be sunbathing. This was a bit odd as it is of common opinion that they like colder, greener water and they were in an area of 74.9 degree water. They cast dead bait to the fish; it ate half then lost interest. They had no bait left but a boat passing by on its way home, handing them some small mackerel; they quickly cast this to the swordfish, who teased them for over 15 minutes, mouthing it, letting it go, mouthing it again until finally it decided to eat it. This resulted in a solid hook-up and an hour later they had a 250 lb swordfish on board. One of this fishing teams usual partners was not on board this day, feeling a bit miffed, Daniel Fisher, headed out to the same area the next day in search of a swordfish too, as he was not about to be outdone. Well, Daniel is a legendary fisherman here, and he also found a swordfish late in the day at almost 6.00 pm, this one was bigger though and it took him two and half hours, with the sun beyond the horizon, before he could get his on board; this one weighed 348 lbs. There are fishermen who fish their entire lives without getting a swordfish, so this is quite an amazing feat. In marlin news we have starting single double and triple marlin days for some boats, on the 17th Matt Rainwater from Fort Worth Texas, released three close to Punta Gorda aboard “Bill Collector” – Matt actually ended up with seven striped marlin for his four days fishing, which was low for him. I’m afraid we have spoilt him in the past with phenomenal bill fishing so this was considered a slow week for him, not there was anything we could do. He had been reading the reports, knew the conditions and took a risk any way. He’s over it now and sent us some truly amazing photos. Another boat with a triple marlin day was “Adriana” on April 20th with Gerardo & Alicia Cruz from Thousand Oaks aboard, who along with friends Xochitl & Antonio Catellan did well to fight these three fish around the 140 lb mark, caught with both ballyhoo and caballito at the 11.50 spot. “C-Rod” rounded out the week with three marlin for Howard & Jennifer Harris, Tammy & Brice Brolles from South Lake, Texas - all released. Pisces anglers caught a total of 25 striped marlin this week, all released except two.

OTHER SPECIES: Small game catches have certainly sustained our reputation as a fishing destination over the last couple of months. With absentee marlin catches, the slack has been taken up with great yellow-tail fishing, this week no exception for fish up to 30 lbs. We also had good catches on sierra close to shore, plenty of skipjack, some pompano, triggerfish, amberjack and cocinero jacks.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: It’s like we have two distinct climates right now, the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez. The Pacific has been cold and windy early morning and in the evenings. The Sea of Cortez on the other hand has been relatively calm with some ground swell the last few days.

LOCATION: Sea of Cortez 95 spot, Palmilla, Punta Gorda, Destiladeres. Boats on half days opted for the area near the Old Lighthouse up to Margaritas on the Pacific.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP. 74 F

BEST LURES: Live bait or dead ballyhoo for marlin, though some took lures also, inshore hoochis, rapalas and strip bait.

Shark Whisperer?

Below you will find a video that we thought was very cool, so we want to share it with you.

We especially like the music (always Tracy’s favorite with the Mariachi bands) and if you understand Spanish you will know why the producer chose this particular song.

It starts off by saying “What beautiful eyes you have below those brows, they want to look at me, but you won’t allow them even to blink (in the video this refers to the unblinking eyes of the sharks)”. It then goes on to talk about a girl from Malaga, Spain, who is a beautiful enchantress who is bewitching; which is what the girl in the video does to the shark- puts it in a trance.

Just watch to see what she does. This is very well filmed and as stated above the music suits it perfectly.

Enjoy

Nearly that time again!

Lure's at the ready, 10+ and we're off. I said I would leave it to the first week in June but I'm tempted to try in the next week or so

A Pinhole Easter

ON THE RECORD

.. Just submitted a pinhole photograph to WORLDWIDE PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY DAY gallery. Taken yesterday at about 3:30 PM during a light snow flurry at Old Faithful. The data for submission is:
Canon 30D, short extension tube & black cardboard with electrical tape seal. Tin foil pinhole, f256, 1/3 sec. Snowing lightly.
.. Snow has continued to bless us with it's presence and it's been wet and warm. About 12" during the last week. It is usually melted by mid-afternoon. Snow cover on the ground is down to about 3 - 4 feet and melting at a pace that will nourish trees and rivers alike.
.. Fishing & catching continues to be between good and spectacular down canyon on the Gallatin River. Very few midges, but some brownish mayflies are showing up. Fish are eating nymphs and small streamers. There are only a few reports of exceptional surface catching: we're headed down canyon now.
