Match – Club Christmas Match – 1st out of 13
As well as being our Christmas match, today was also the last match in our club series, as well as the final for the knockout. With 2 matches to go I had a comfortable 11pt lead, but lost 7pts to Andy on the Little Lake last month. As for the knockout, I hoped it would be 3rd time lucky, because the 2 previous times I reached the final I fell at the last hurdle.
Reports suggested the fish were shying away from too much feed and looking at the results from yesterday’s match showed a winning weight of 51lb (Vince Shipp), but half the field, which included Des Shipp, didn’t weigh and the best silvers weight was only 6lb.
I found myself on peg 31, which initially I wasn’t impressed with. It’s situated on the island opposite the road bank, which we decided not to include it, because it had been fishing awful, with only one weighing in from yesterday match, so I wasn’t optimistic. However the big consolation was I had loads of space, with the next peg being around the corner of the island on peg 35. So I was billy no mates and couldn’t see anyone.
With so few silvers showing, I decided to ignore trying to catch any roach and only set up 1 pole rig (0.4g HB frostie, .12 bottom, 18 silverfish pellet) to fish soft pellet and maggot. I also set-up a lead rod to search the swim and a 3AAA Crystal Insert Waggler.
5mins before the all in a carp topped about 35m out. At least there was some in the area, which was confidence booster. On the all-in I went straight out at 12m on 4mm expander without feeding to see whether there was any fish close in. After 10mins I missed a bite, before connecting with the next 10mins later, landing a 5lber.
So with the blank avoided, I cast the lead with double hair rigged corn to where the carp had previously topped. In the meantime I toss potted a pinch of micros, plus a couple of maggots over the pole line, as well as a big toss pot of bait 13m to my left and finally started to catapult caster almost at right angles to my right, in front of peg 32.
For the next 30mins I was getting loads of liners on the lead but no fish. I had a gut feeling the waggler might work, so I cast it as far as I could with double maggot. Over the next 90mins I had 4 carp, including a near 10lber which decided to kite right around the island, which meant I had to stand on my seat box in attempt to hold the rod as high as possible to avoid getting snagged on the platforms (I couldn’t walk round due to the shrubby).
The carp seemed to have sulked away, because I started to catch the occasional roach. Whilst fishing the waggler I kept the pole line topped up with a pinch of bait, as well as continuing to catapult caster to my right, where I had a few roach, but they weren’t really coming regularly.
With an hour to go, I was wondering where my next carp would come from, when a carp topped to the right of where I had previously caught. 15mins later I had a carp on double corn and my final carp came on the pole with 10mins remaining.
I thought I only had 35-40lb, so was a bit surprised to weigh 53lb. As it turned out it really didn’t matter, because the rest of the lake really didn’t fish well, with the next best weight being only 9-14. In fact the rest of the field only weighed 44lb in total, so this was probably my most convincing win.
Being the last club match, meant I am now the club champion, the club lake champion and the knockout winner.

13/11/11 - Ivy House - Little Lake
Weight – 3lb 14oz
Catch – 15 Roach, 2 Perch, 1 Skimmer
Weather – Bright & sunny, SE breeze.
Match – Club – 11th out of 16
We had the choice of the large or little lake, depending on how many booked in. By Friday night we had 10, so we decided on the little lake because apparently it had been fishing well, however come Sunday we ended up with 16, so a bit of a squeeze, since it was now too late to change lakes.
My drawing arm hasn’t been the best recently and it didn’t disappoint with peg 11 along the car park bank.
Since I expected the fishing to be hard, decided to knock up one of my favourite winter groundbaits, black lake with mussel & squid. 3 balls went in at 13m were it was 7ft deep with some caster and micros. Also feed caster at 8m. I would have preferred to fish shorter but the lake bed is like a bowl with no shelf.
The first 15mins was spent on the lead/corn, but with no liners or bites, switched to the short line which produced some roach. Unfortunately they weren’t coming quickly but at least I was catching unlike most, although Pete to my right had already fed enough for everyone!
After an hour a switch to the 13m line, produced more roach, then a 1½lb skimmer. With no further bites I topped with another ball of groundbait, which failed, so decided to cup in 4 balls and just leave it, but never had a bite from here. My short line produced another short burst of roach on the deck. I tried catching at mid depth, but other than 1 bite this also failed to produce.
With 2 hours left of the 5, I was falling behind as the odd carp was being landed from the opposite bank.
I had been lightly feeding a 16m swim with 3 & 4mm pellet and with an hour left decided to concentrate hoping for a carp, trying soft pellet and corn without success. In the last hour I fell further behind as Graham to my left landed a 9lber, before Chris opposite had a proper munter of 16lb on his roach rig.
Despite my best efforts I couldn’t get a carp, I even tried the margins, but with anglers either side, coupled with flat, bright conditions it was a nonstarter, but I had to try.
During the weigh in, a number of single carp weights beat me and nearly everyone had a carp from peg 18 and around the island. There simply wasn’t any carp in the deeper water in my area of the lake.

16/01/11 - Ivy House - Match Lake
Weight – 12lb 6oz
Catch – 27 Roach, 6 Skimmers, 1 Carp, 1 Hybrid, 1 Rudd, 1 Perch
Weather – Mild, cloudy and very windy. Rain later.
Match - Glenfall Christmas Match - 3rd overall
For the 3rd time of asking we were at Ivy House for my clubs Christmas match. Originally we rescheduled just to have the island on the main lake, but today we had the whole lake, which at least meant more room. Whilst having my breakfast I also found out that the ice had killed all the carp in the old canal, because the lake isn’t that deep and there was more ice than water!
Today was also the final of the knockout, between Andy Lord and myself with a free season ticket at stake. Andy however had some practice yesterday, winning Saturdays open with 14lb caught on the feeder. Apparently very few carp showed and those that targeted them blew out.
There was a decent turnout today of 18, which also included a couple of guests. Andy being the venue expert, because he does fish here quite often I needed a bit of luck at the draw. Unfortunately peg 35 found its way into my hand, which was on the left hand side of the island and I would have the strong wind blowing across me left to right. Andy in the meantime drew peg 5, with the wind blowing from behind and a millpond in front. A quick chat with Gary Etheridge confirmed my fears about my peg. Not great.
The draw was at 9, fishing 10-3, but by the time I unloaded the car and got to my peg is was already 9.20 and attempts to get the start pushed back fell on deaf ears. With the wind blowing the way it was I decided on a light feeder (.10 bottom & 20 B911) to fish at 13m. My reasoning was that if the wind dropped I could fish the pole over the same line, without the need to keep loads of lines on the go.
At the all in the feeder went straight out, whilst I set up my remaining pole rigs. A Jean Francois 0.6g at 13m (.10 bottom & 20 silverfish pellet) and a Jolly 4x16 at 8m (.10 bottom & 22 silverfish maggot). On Gary’s advice I also set up a 4x12 to fish at 5m in front of the platform on peg 36, where it was shallower, but never had a bite on it.
40mins on the feeder and all I had to show for my efforts was 1 squashed maggot. However the wind had dropped a little and 1st put in on the pole resulted in a bite, but the small roach fell off. Next put in a 2oz skimmer was in the net. At least I avoided a blank and so far I had only seen 2 others catch. Ian Pople on peg 19 who had 2 carp on the feeder, but that was it for him for the rest of the match and Don Smith on 37 with 2 skimmers, including 1 about 1½lb, again on the feeder.
My 13m line started to produce small roach and skimmers, but I was losing too many in the wind. Barbed hooks would have sorted that out!
For the next 2hrs, I kept rotating between 8 & 13m, depending on how bad the wind was. I couldn’t see Andy, but I reasoned if I kept putting fish in the net, the better fish would turn up.
On the 13m line I was cupping a pinch of micros and caster every 15mins, whilst 6-8 casters went in at 8m every couple minutes. The 8m line was producing more fish, but a 1½lb skimmer from the 13m line on double red maggot was very welcome. Over the 13m single maggot only produced small fish, whilst expanders didn’t produce a bite, so I stuck with double maggot.
Unfortunately going into the 4th hour the wind increased again and I spent more time at 8m. I tried fishing the straight lead over the 13m line, but I couldn’t get a bite, which was frustrating, because I knew there was fish there.
With 20mins left, I hooked something more substantial at 8m on single red maggot. Initially it just sat there pretending to be a snag, before it decided it was time to move. As it headed for the middle of the lake, I preying I had hooked it properly and the size 22 would hold. 5mins after the all out and much plodding around I eventually landed the fish.
The question was how had Andy done? Unfortunately it was quickly established that he had 5 carp and a big skimmer, which meant he had won the match and the knockout.
My silvers weighed 4-14 and my carp was 7-8. So 12-6, which was enough for 3rd overall and a brown envelope.

24/11/10 - Ivy House - Small Lake

Weather – Frosty start. Cold & clear day
So a day at Ivy House. Not exactly my favourite venue, however I wanted to see how it was fishing prior to my clubs Christmas match.
My mate Jim wanted to go fishing, so was happy to come along, unfortunately it co-incided with the first serious frost of the year. As I left the house the car temperature gauge read 1c, when I came off the motorway it was down to -1c, but by the time I got to the venue it was -4.5c. I now began to wonder whether there would be any benefit to practicing.
The match would be on the island of the big lake and the latest reports suggested the causeway would be the best area, however on arrival the island was closed. I thought at the time this would be due to the Wednesday Open on the lake, so decided to fish the small lake, which I thought would offer us the best chance of catching.
I put Jim on peg 21, which is probably the best peg on the lake, whilst I settled on peg 20. Fortunately, the lakes hadn’t iced over, but a few more frosts and they soon will be.
Initially settled on 2 lines, caster at 6m and groundbait & caster at 13m. The short line mostly produced tiny wasp type perch, with the odd better fish, but the roach won’t come close. The longer line produced a 1lb+ skimmer and small roach, by toss potting 6 casters every put in, but generally fishing was slow.
The carp came to the lead & double corn, but I had to wait a long time for a bite. I also tried the waggler, but no joy. Jim he had a tough day, catching a small chub & perch, as well as losing a carp.
As for the big lake, I was hoping to walk the match to see what was catching, but there wasn’t any match and the island was in fact OK to fish. Anyway I did have a chat with Gary Etheridge who was practicing on the waggler, but was also struggling due to the cold, but at least he gave me a few pointers.
Looks like the club match could turn into carp bingo.

06/12/09 - Ivy House - Little Lake
Weight – 20lb 8oz
Catch – 6 Carp, 4 Roach, 2 Perch
Weather – Mostly sunny, occasional showers. Gusty wind
Match – Club Christmas Match - 1st overall
I drew peg 12, only to find myself on permanent peg 13! Not sure why, but cards had been used to peg the lake, because some of the permanent peg marking had worn away. My peg was in the corner of the lake with the wind blowing into it, which I wasn’t too disappointed about, although I was sharing the corner with Jim and we were a little too close. Personally would have preferred to be on permanent peg 12, because you can fish into the corner, with the wind off my back, plus you had more open water.
Anyway, I had a job to do. The last time I was here was 12 months ago, but reports suggested it had been fishing OK, so I fed a pinch of 3mm pellet at 13m at 1 o’clock (I couldn’t go any longer due to the awkward wind). I also wanted to set up a short line for roach, feeding caster, but plumbing around suggested my swim was bowl shape without any shelves, so I decided to feed at 9m and hoped to catch the roach on the drop. My final 2 swims would be 6m to my left in the corner and under the pallet of peg 12.
After feeding my swims, I started on the tip with hair rigged corn. After 15 mins I was getting liners but no bites. The 13m line didn’t produce a bite, so it was time to try the 9m line after I had kept flicking caster in. After waiting for bites, I managed 2 small perch & a roach, which wasn’t a good sign.
Back on the 13m line I waited it out on double maggot and the float eventually went under. A 3lb carp was very welcome and with just over an hour gone I was the only 1 to have caught a carp, so the lake was fishing hard. Heavy overnight rain probably didn’t help and the wind was making presentation difficult.
By this time, my headache was really kicking in and having the sun shining directly in front wasn’t helping. With no more bites on the pole, it was time to try the lead again, whilst I search for some nurofen plus. Fortunately the car was parked directly behind me and tablets where duly found. When I got back to my peg I was fiddling with some of my kit and my rod nearly got dragged in as carp no.2 found its way in the net.
Another carp on the pole soon followed on triple pinkie, but the wind was becoming a problem. I had initially set up a 0.5g rig in the 6 foot swim, but really a 1g rig would have been better. My headache meant I couldn’t be bothered to set up a new rig, so I lobbed the lead over the pole line and soon had carp no.4.
The 4th hour of the match was extremely slow. It was close between Graham Millard on peg 15, Brian Stockham on peg 11 and me. Brian was aided by a foulhooked 7lber up the arse!
My margins only produced a single roach and a new swim 12m in front proved fruitless. It seemed everyone had stopped catching and I felt the fish had probably moved further into the middle of the lake, so I cast at an angle into peg 12. 2 casts and 2 carp on double hair rigged corn definitely put me in the lead, but I never had a bite for the rest of the match. Fortunately neither did Graham or Brian.
To be honest this was a bit of boring match, having made the decision to ignore the silvers after an hour, it was just a case of waiting for a carp. Fortunately the nurofen did its job, so I felt better by the end of the match
At the weigh in Graham weighed 15-4 for 2nd and Brian was 3rd with 15-1 for 3rd, so those last 2 carp were needed.
Congratulations to Ian who won the Individual Championship, admittedly courtesy of me missing 1 match.

My margins only produced a single roach and a new swim 12m in front proved fruitless. It seemed everyone had stopped catching and I felt the fish had probably moved further into the middle of the lake, so I cast at an angle into peg 12. 2 casts and 2 carp on double hair rigged corn definitely put me in the lead, but I never had a bite for the rest of the match. Fortunately neither did Graham or Brian.
To be honest this was a bit of boring match, having made the decision to ignore the silvers after an hour, it was just a case of waiting for a carp. Fortunately the nurofen did its job, so I felt better by the end of the match
At the weigh in Graham weighed 15-4 for 2nd and Brian was 3rd with 15-1 for 3rd, so those last 2 carp were needed.
Congratulations to Ian who won the Individual Championship, admittedly courtesy of me missing 1 match.
