Z Fish Report (8/25/11)

The Terrafin Surface Satellite photos are showing the surface water temperatures averaging about 83 degrees for the entire coast, and on out to about the 1,000 fathom curve at 30 miles. The blue water is hugging the 100 fathom line at about 6 miles, with variant green water being pushed out of the major river systems. That is basically the story.

In the blue water the few boats fishing are getting a sailfish a day average per boat, and several oceanicos (skipjack tuna averaging about 10 pounds). The Mexican captains consider a hard fighting skipjack tuna as an excellent eating fish, and will pursue them, devoting less time to the sailfish. Skipjack in my opinion are not that great for table fare, even though 75% of the world’s canned tuna is made from them, but they are great action on a light line outfit or fly rod.

We are still getting 4 to 5 roosters a day average, but we have to work for them. The key is finding the clean water along the beach. We have had a lot of rain and the coastal waters are not only just discolored from the river runoff, but the fresh water is laying on top the saltwater and shuts down the (shallow water) close to the beach fishing.

Being the discolored / fresh water is sitting on top the salt water, a slow trolled live bait, on a diving plane, is getting good results. When the clean water is located, the top water surface poppers are then getting the roosters.

The biggest problem is there are only 3 or 4 boats a day going out with clients. Our normal slowdown for the year has come way early.
