Here's the Fish Report

JANUARY 12TH TO 18TH, 2012

Overall Catch Success Rate 100%

Numbers at a glance: Marlin 30%, Dorado 33%, Tuna 79%

BILLFISH: Billfish catches were decent this week though not fantastic – well that is with the exception of Pisces Fearless, a 50 ft Viking and our boat of the week.  On January 17th Anthony Huray and family from Singapore were on board this vessel and were amazed to catch and release seven striped marlin. This crew found a small school of marlin just past the Old Lighthouse and caught the seven stripers on a combination of ballyhoo and orange colored lures. Other boats did catch the odd marlin here and there as well as yellow fin tuna, but then it was a choice they had to make – head offshore for the almost guaranteed tuna catch, or stick around the lighthouse area for a “maybe” shot at marlin. Nevertheless thirty percent of charters did catch a marlin during their trip, with sizes ranging from 100 to 180 lbs. Another boat that had a busy day was Pisces 31 ft Bertram Rebecca, for Alicia Levy and her family from Sheridan, Wyoming – they fished at San Jaime and at Migrino and released on striped marlin and caught twenty four tuna and two dorado. Pisces anglers caught a total of seventeen striped marlin – all released.

OTHER SPECIES: Yellow fin tuna were by far the most numerous sportfish caught in Cabo this week with almost eighty percent of boats catching between two and thirty six fish in a day ranging in size from 20 to 30 lbs. The majority of the tuna were found 20 to 23 miles out from the Lighthouse and took cedar plugs more than any other lure.  Pisces 31 ft Bertram Tracy Ann had a stupendous day for Jeff Lemming from Atlanta, Georgia, on January 16th,  who with friends, caught thirty six tuna, of which they released ten, as well as a striped marlin.  This same day, Rebecca loaded up with thirty yellow fins for Joe Baily and party, from Andover, Minnesota. Most boats had tuna catches in the double digits leading to a total count of 377 for Pisces boats.  Dorado catches were steady with thirty three percent of boats catching from one to six fish – live bait was what worked on this species this week, preferably mackerel. Weights on the dorado were 20 to 35 lbs.  Stan Gribble was out on Pisces 48 Cabo Great Escape on January 12th and landed a nice 45 lb wahoo, larger than what we have been seeing lately, as well as capturing two dorado.

LOCATION: Pacific – Los Arcos to San Jaime.
WEATHER: Pretty cold in Cabo this week, partly cloudy and in the 40’s at nighttime. Seas mostly calm.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 71-72 F
BEST LURES: Cedar plugs, mackerel, green and orange colored lures.
