TRES GENERATIONS

Ron Katz of Westwood, CA visited the East Cape in March to fish on the Jen Wren. He had such a wonderful time he could hardly wait to bring his 12 year old grandson Sean and son Todd to share the experience. This trip turned into a fishing experience none of them will soon forget.

First day fishing we started by catching giant humbolt squid for bait and in a short time had all we needed. With loads of bait we decided to target tuna with the understanding Sean had never caught a marlin so that would be our secondary target. We ran straight east of Buena Vista almost an hour and plunked in the lures. Trolling less than five minutes Sean had his striped marlin on the line. He handled the equipment like a pro and in a short time we leadered and released the fish. As the day went on everyone proceeded to catch limits of tuna.

Day two we decided to go with the flow and fish for tuna again because the bite had been so good. About noon time with the fish boxes almost full we hooked a fish that was obviously bigger than the 20 to 40 pounders we had been catching. The Tres generations tag teamed the fish and all pulled on it with all they had. After a 2 1/2 hour battle a huge tuna was brought to gaff. The fish weighed in at 153 pounds.

Last day Ron informed me they needed to be back to the dock by 10:45AM to catch their flight. Sean had never caught a dorado so we decided to take the time we had to go for it. We made the 20 minute run to Punta Pescadero and started to troll. It wasn't 5 minutes trolling when a nice bull dorado ate the same lure Sean had caught his marlin on. Again like a pro Sean brought it to gaff. Trolling for a short time more we hook a sailfish. Sean was up again as he had never caught one before. Ending the day we dropped the Katz boys on the boat dock at 10:30AM with a score of one bull dorado, one sailfish and two striped marlin.

Fishing 2 1/2 days on the Jen Wren 12 year old Sean landed his 1st striped marlin, 1st dorado, 1st sailfish, 1st yellowfin tuna and participated in the landing of a 153 pound monster tuna. Both father and grandfather were proud and made the comment the Jen Wren has set a bench mark that is very memorable and will be hard to beat.

The small Accurate reels were easy for Sean to handle yet strong enough to easily stand up to the punishment of big fish.
