September ROCKED!

When I moved to the East Cape 18 years ago all the resorts would close for August and September. And for good reason, as this time is the height of the hurricane season. Now things have changed. Communication and technology has made the change. Back in the day there was no way for us know when a storm was coming. There was no choice but to stay on alert at all times and boats in the water were always in danger. Now having access to high speed internet and the advances in weather prediction we receive ample notice to prepare for a storm. All of this has allowed us to have the month illustrated below.

My Daughter Chanda & her husband Jim earned their PADI Open Water Certification.

Jim was quick to set a new record on our new boat with this 201 pound tuna. The fish was landed on a Boss 655WC with 60 pound mono backed up with 85 pound AccuBraid and took 8 hours to land.

I promised my granddaughter Maya we would only fish half a day so she got a little bored while her dad was fighting the huge tuna. She hung in like a trooper though.

We hooked the tuna at 11:30 AM and didn't get home until after 9PM.

Pre fishing for the La Paz Gold Cup we hooked and released a 600 pound blue marlin. It was my first time to use an Accurate BX2 50, and I loved it. I found that the reels big arbor picks up line faster in low gear than other reels. It was frustrating to catch this huge fish the day before a big money tournament. We were out looking for bait and the fish hit a 3.5 Zuker lure.

Shot gun start on the 1st day of the La Paz Gold Cup. Only one qualifying marlin was brought to the scale for 82 boats.

After the tournament my high school buddy Gary Street and I did a little tuna fishing. I wasn't up for another 8 hour battle like we had with Jim so we moved up to Accurate BX2 30 reels with 80 pound line. This gave us a huge advantage and we were able to whip these 80 to 100 pound fish in short order.

Brian Kelly (in the white cap) arrived with some of his buddies to celebrate his birthday and landed this dog as the tuna continue to bite. Below is a picture of his 2 daughters. They helped keep the morale of the boat crew up.
